Math Mistakes (Extra Credit) Trig. Identities #3 (title:1+1=1???)

http://mathmistakes.org/?p=843

What did they do wrong?

  • The student seems to have taken each trig. function individually and put them in fraction form (ex: sin/1) and divided them as in the original form.
  • Then he took csc(x)= 1/sin and sec= 1/cos and crossed cancel the original sin and cos. He then equal 1/1= 1
What they had done instead?
(shown in the picture)
  • Instead of putting them individually over ones they should have taken csc=1/sin (x) and sec= 1/cos(x) then multiply top and bottom.
  • they should have gotten sin^2+ cos^2, and seen it as a trig. identity that would equal to one.
